As you all know our overall event presentation has improved greatly since we started planning our arena commentaries in advance and arranging for commentators to give them, rather than leaving things to chance. Since we have tackled this subject head on the overall impression we make on the audience and event organisers has been hugely enhanced. Let's face it - watching an NFOE skirmish with no background knowledge to the French & Indian Wars is a pretty pointless exercise. Although we don't have a vast membership, an interesting and informative commentary easily makes up for this lack of numbers.
However, we have a problem at the moment with the Sherborne event at the end of May. Both Maria and Lucy, our wonderful commentators last season, are unable to be at the event and we desperately need someone to take on the task. The good news is that the public event is just for one day.
The task is not as onerous as some people think. The commentator will receive a complete script at least a week in advance that just needs to be read. Most of the commentary is involved in setting the scene and giving a background to the War. We do not expect you to do a running commentary during the battle itself but the script includes some 'fillers' that can be given if there is a lull in the fighting, eg, explaining why guns sometimes go 'click' and describing the different units on the field. There is then a 'closing' script to read at the end for when the units form up and salute the crowd.
What we need is someone with a reasonably clear speaking voice who is happy to give it a go. Maria will be commentating at Hop Farm so you can see what is involved there and I will be at Sherborne to guide you through everything.
Please give this some serious thought - it is fun, really! And without a volunteer we have a problem. If you are interested in finding out anymore or volunteering then please contact me direct.
