Steve I have them, nice readable and really well done. not expensive. I think they should stay in any F&IW reader bookshelves. Piero

Given that I was the eejit who asked for fiction recommendations, I can now contribute something in return. Not our period, but at least the same century.
I have rather enjoyed Iain Gale's new novel 'Man of Honour' (Marlburian period, with more to follow by the looks of things).

I have just acquired 'Savage Wilderness', a novel by Harold Coyle. Not sure if i'll like it yet but he was an American Regular officer, so that must count for something.

...and, of course, 'Achtung Schweinehund! - A Boy's Own Story of Imaginary Combat', by Harry Pearson, which is an absolute hoot. It features Airfix, Action Man, Clark's Commando shoes etc. It majors on wargaming and only has a small portion on reenactment, but the bit on the viking reservation is almost worth getting the book for in its own right.

"Firearms, traps,&tools of the Mountain Men" by Carl P.Russell Don't worry,I'm not getting measured for Buckskins & buying a Hawken...... Exploring the physical artifacts of the early west,In chapters on knives, axes, traps,& various artifacts, the author goes back to the earliest days of European settlement to trace their development. The Firearms chapter is mainly post-1800,but includes interesting stuff on the development of the Trade gun. For £5.25 from Amazon,it's well worth it,if only for the numerous drawings of museum examples. Steve

I can't believe no-one has put this up before. I was recommended it by Geoff (biffa). It's a historical novel but very meticulously written with a great pacing. I'm sure there are a few errors but nothing too significant and there is a great perspective from the Indian side of things. It's called Wilderness Empire by Allan Eckert (see Amazon) and at £15 for a big hardback, well worth it. Especially as a quick start for people to get hooked on this period. If you knew about this book before, shame on you for not mentioning it!

Read any of Eckert's....'tho fictionalised, they're very well researched & give a real flavour for the time & place...Think the whole series goes up to about 1830 & there's the one-off 'Dark & Bloody River',the story of the Ohio country...Did I mention I quite like them? Steve
