One of my projects before the new season is to make myself a bonnet de police so I can be a little less formal about the place and hopefully prolong the life of my tricorne. Pattern and materials aren't a problem (white main body, red peak), but I'd appreciate advice on the decoration. The now-defunct website for the US group doing Guyenne indicated that there should be a yellow fleur-de-lys on the peak, but didn't give any source for this. I've also seen an Osprey drawing (of a different regiment but one in New France) with the tassel in yellow. Does anyone have any sources for yellow trim being used, or even for the fleur-de-lys being used at all? When we researched this for Dillon's we came to the conclusion that they should be plain, but that was for the 1740s and everything was supposed to be plain then, whereas by the '50s everything seems to get gaudier again. Any thoughts? Cheers, Andrew

As far as I know.....It was up to the Regiment...If there's no description/illustration of a specific example...The World's your Lobster......(There is a revisionist theory Marines in Canada never had them, but use Tucques...)

Here here ive heard that to steve as the marine have no documented issue hence why ive now got a nice red tucques from sally pointer going back to the question i would suggest leaving the fleur-de-lys off until you get further info they make for good crosses for head shots and just yellow trim around the hat and tassels seem to be missing in canada as well cut mine off already ,forget the avatar

Sounds like the consensus would be to leave it plain then. That said, I notice the Artillerie have fleurs de lys on theirs, so is there some more info out there?

All the secondary information I have has fdl on them - but how accurate that is god only knows. I do have a nice pattern for one though. I could make a good smurfette with my hair, but I think my baps are too big (
