A pure guess but miltia would make sense as they might not have waist belts, maybe the short bayonet would be better for crowd control?

yeah, thats what most of the muzzle loading association group have speculated, but they don't really have a clue either, there are several examples of this type of gun in production mid to late 18th, but most seem to be in the America's rather than here, even though a lot are British made. it would make sense that they were produced for colonial issue with the thought going into compact design for woodland or brushland campaign, warfare or skirmish.....?
