Whilst browsing at the Napoleonic Fayre in Essex on Sunday. I came across this American chap making & selling Knapsacks & haversacks from mid 18thC to early 19thC.
His Knapsacks were the best I have seen. Almost entiely hand sewn & useing Claytons buff leather (where appropriate) and veg based paints & linseed oils for waterproofing etc.
He had the charming French sack type, strapped to your back style, Rev War packs both Brit & US & lots of various patterns of Napoleonic. He also has full documentation & research to back up his products.
I bought a 1783-1806 patt soft pack - which I have been trying to source now for some three years.

Have just taken a delivery of stuff from Gedney. Apart from being stung at the last minute by Customs and Parcelforce, I'm generally pleased, but it is let down in places by the use of modern shortcuts (shoe lace as a tie). However, I'm rather chuffed by the white (actually off-white) wool blend stockings which have a good appearance.

I've just bought in almost a whole hide of buff leather from Claytons. This is getting more and more difficult to get in decent quality, luckily I buy a lot from them so they never send me rubbish. I'm just making up orders for three British Army 1740/1750 sword belts, and a cartridge bag. Both are from the 1742 clothing book. Mail me if you want pictures and prices - via my web site www.foxblade.co.uk or call 01908 367109

Don't know, but like many, many sutlers their women's kit is not very good and I wouldn't recommend them for that- don't know enough about guy's clothing. Lots of sutlers have managed to get that better than the women's kit. (no import duty is good!)
Best,
Judith
